Ingredients

Chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chocolate chips Use chocolate chips or similar melting chocolate.
Coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil Helps the shell set firm at freezer temperatures.

Equipment

  • 1 microwave-safe bowl

Method

Melt the chocolate
  1. Combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl until evenly mixed.
  2. Microwave in 20-second bursts, stirring between each, until fully melted and smooth (about 40–90 seconds total depending on microwave power).
Cool and serve
  1. Let the melted mixture cool for 2-3 minutes until warm but not hot.
  2. Drizzle immediately over very cold ice cream.
  3. Let it harden into a crackly shell within seconds while the ice cream stays cold.
Store for next use
  1. Store any leftover sauce at room temperature in a jar so it stays pourable and can re-melt easily.

Notes

Pro tip: pour onto ice cream straight from the freezer so the shell sets right away. Store leftovers at room temperature in a jar for up to 1 week; re-melt in the microwave in short bursts as needed. For a dietary swap, use dairy-free chocolate chips to make it dairy-free while keeping the same coconut oil base.
